Our MinEx CRC Publication Spotlight showcases peer-reviewed and publicly available scientific publications from our research teams.

This spotlight features a recent two-part publication led by MinEx CRC PhD graduate Rui Huang in collaboration with researchers at Curtin University, examining the wear behaviour and drilling performance of impregnated diamond bits used in hard rock drilling. Diamond drill bits are a critical component of mineral exploration drilling programs, and understanding how they wear and perform under different operating conditions is important for improving drilling efficiency, reducing costs and supporting more effective exploration outcomes.

The research develops new experimental approaches to investigate how drill bits wear under varying rock types and drilling conditions, and how that wear influences drilling response and performance. Together, the studies provide a framework for optimising drilling parameters, extending bit life and supporting the development of more efficient drilling operations.

Part 1 of the publication explores the mechanisms and rates of bit wear across different rock formations and operating conditions. Part 2 examines the relationship between bit wear and drilling response, identifying pathways for the real-time assessment of bit condition during drilling. The combined findings provide valuable insights that can assist industry in improving drilling performance and decision-making in the field.

The publication also highlights the long-term value of collaborative research and the significant contributions of MinEx CRC postgraduate researchers. Rui completed his PhD in early 2025, and these publications demonstrate how postgraduate research can deliver practical outcomes for the drilling and mineral exploration industries.

MinEx CRC congratulates all authors involved in the publication, including Dr Rui Huang, Dr Thomas Richard and Assoc/Prof Masood Mostofi from Curtin University.
