This spotlight features a new research paper involving MinEx CRC researchers has explored how incorporating spatial uncertainty into geophysical inversion can help produce more reliable models of what lies beneath the Earth’s surface.

The research, led by Mark Lindsay (CSIRO) with co-authors Vitaliy Ogarko, Jeremie Giraud (both UWA) and Mosayeb Khademi (FII), investigates an approach that incorporates spatial uncertainty constraints into the inversion process.

The research highlights the importance of accounting for uncertainty when using geophysical data to understand complex subsurface environments, particularly as mineral exploration increasingly targets deposits concealed beneath cover.
