ARGON GEOCHRONOLOGY WORKSHOP:

Date:
Monday 14 November 2022

Time:
2:00pm – 5:15pm

Venue:
University of Adelaide, 134 Sprigg Room, Mawson Building, Frome Road, Adelaide
Please note that the Sprigg Room does not have disabled access as the building does not have a lift/elevator. The workshop room is located upstairs on the first floor.

Overview:
MinEx CRC research is delivering new insights into mineralogical processes relevant to ore deposit formation and tectonics through an argon geochronology research program, including through a dedicated MinEx CRC Opportunity Fund Project with case studies across the continent. Results from these case studies will be detailed, as well as outlining the power of the methodology for the assessment of features such as paleo depth, or timing the movement of major faults and shear zones by dating breccias and/or mylonites.

This workshop will cover both the basics of the technique as well as advanced levels of data collection, interrogation and interpretation and will leave participants with a fuller understanding of the power of the technique for characterising mineral systems. Case studies will illustrate the impact and significance of the results obtained.

Key topics to be explored include:

  • Argon geochronology 101 – interpreting age spectra, asymptotes and limits, and developing Frequently Measured Age plots
  • Case studies from the MinEx CRC Opportunity fund project including the Olympic Dam region
  • Case studies from the National Argon Map (NAM) using data from the western Aileron Province
  • Palaeodepth, temperature-time and metasomatic fluid and alteration events

The workshop will be presented by Anthony Reid (GSSA), Dave Kelsey (GSWA), Marnie Forster (ANU) and Gordon Lister (The Virtual Explorer)

The workshop is recommended for anyone working with NDI drill hole datasets or with samples that need to be placed in a regional context.

No previous argon geochronology experience is required.
